Smoking in the Comics Web Extras
We at Hogan's Alley are the last people to advocate tobacco consumption. (We would rather spend our money on comics stuff.) However, comics characters--and their creators--were eager advocates for lighting up, regardless of age, gender or species. David Folkman's examination of smoking in the comics in Hogan's Alley #15 was exhaustive, but we have more material on hand than we could fit into the issue. (Some of the material below appeared in the print edition, but we wanted to show it here in color.) E-mail us your favorite examples, and if we like them we'll include them here with your name!

Selling the Smokes
Of course, finding cartoon-style ads that sell cigarettes is as hard as finding sand on the beach, so we've supplied a few that either amused us or impressed us with their artistry. But in either case, the sampling represented here is a drop in the spittoon.
